Day 35 - Jesus, My Great High Priest

Jesus' high-priestly prayer is called a dramatic monologue and is the climax of the farewell discourse. This prayer begins with Jesus and His disciples, but it extends to all believers throughout history. We read of several topics unfolding:

1. Prayer that Jesus would be glorified (1-5)
2. Prayer for the disciples (6-19)
3. Prayer for all the saints throughout history (20-26)

Two questions that may help organize the passage for you: 1) What does Jesus desire for His followers? and 2) How should followers of Jesus live in light of His prayer for them?

Other motifs to trace would be: nature and relationship between the Father and the Son, truth, eternal life, unity (or "one-ness"), relationship of believers to each other and the world.

Today, the texts of the songs are very good. Also, the meditation will be a large chunk of Hebrews.

  • Reading: John 17:1-26
  • Memory passage: John 14:1-6
  • Memory passage: Matthew 28:1-10 - I am going to begin reviewing the Resurrection passage with my children. We learned the story from Matthew, but you could also work any of the other Gospels.
  • Memory verse: John 17:17
  • Song: Jesus My Great High Priest and Before the Throne of God Above
  • Activity: If you had not added the disciples to the list of those who believed, you can do so today (v. 9). Also, today is a special day, because today is the day we add our face/names to those who believe. I will give each of my children the opportunity to do this (v. 20). This is not just about the disciples and their narrative, but it is a narrative that tells our story too!
  • Meditation: Hebrews 2:17; 3:1; 4:14-16; 7:11-8:13; 9:11-28
