Day 34 - The Prince of Peace

My littles' plants are growing more every day (the ones we planted inside). One thing I love, is that you can always tell where the sun is, because they all lean towards the sun! This became a lesson for my children today. The plants know where their source is and gravitate towards it. How much more should we gravitate towards our eternal, true, and holy Light!

Jesus bids farewell to His disciples in today's reading. Jesus talks about a broad range of things, but there is a unifying factor: the common trait they share is that everything is expressed in future tense and predict what the disciples can expect in the immediate future.

Ryken says that the disciples (in this instance) are our representatives. What Jesus says about their life in Him is true for all believers! The key motif is that believers will face tribulation in this world. BUT, believers in Jesus WILL have the Triune God as the their great resource in the face of the world's hostility.

These true words in the passage today are so beautiful! How wonderful it is that we have King Jesus who gives us peace and courage and all we need to face what is before us. How beautiful that He said these things on the way to His own immense suffering on our behalf.

Make sure you take a look at the 1 John verses for meditation today and read those to your children too. We overcome the world, because we believe in Jesus as the Son of God.

  • Reading: John 16:16-33
  • Memory passage: John 14:1-6
  • Memory passage: Matthew 28:1-10 - I am going to begin reviewing the Resurrection passage with my children. We learned the story from Matthew, but you could also work any of the other Gospels.
  • Memory verse: John 16:33; 1 John 5:4-5
  • Song: Like a River Glorious
  • Activity: Today is a good day to talk about peace. This can be a difficult concept for young children. We will talk about how we have peace when we share (promote peace with one another), and we will also talk about how Jesus gives us peace to trust in Him. The hymn for today is a great one for little children. We can be at rest because we know who Jesus is.
  • Meditation: Isaiah 9:6-7; Isaiah 26:3; Psalm 119:165; Hebrews 13:5; 1 John 4:4; 1 John 5:4-5; Revelation 17:14
