Day 39 - Power over Death!

Garden Tomb by J. Kirk Richards
Keep in mind that John was an eyewitness to the resurrection. He was the first one to actually look inside the tomb and followed Peter into the tomb. John chose some interesting snapshots for us to view today: Mary Magdalene finds the tomb and runs to find Peter and John. They run to the tomb to find it empty and then return home (1-10). Mary weeps outside the tomb, and Jesus speaks to her (11-18)! Jesus appears that evening to the disciples and instructs them (19-23). Jesus appears to Thomas 8 days later - since he was absent earlier (24-29).

Following these snapshots is John's summary of the Gospel he has written (30-31) - which are the very verses we started with on Day 1!

Look for unifying motifs that permeate the sequence of events here.
  1. Proof that Jesus really is alive
  2. Belief and unbelief (central to the entire Gospel)
  3. Reunions between Jesus and those who love Him
  4. Purpose for writing this book

Again, we are also mentioned in verse 29 "blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." All these things were written down so that we might believe AND have life in His name. Hallelujah!

  • Reading: John 20:1-31
  • Memory passage: John 14:1-6
  • Memory passage: Matthew 28:1-10 - I am going to begin reviewing the Resurrection passage with my children. We learned the story from Matthew, but you could also work any of the other Gospels.
  • Memory verse: John 20:30-31
  • Songs for meditation: Christ is Risen, He is Risen Indeed
  • Activity: We have a felt tomb with a big stone that we had on our board. This morning, we rolled the stone away and found that the tomb was empty! Also, I love today that we can add John's face and name specifically to our board of belief (8). Mary Magdalene and the disciples also believe (specifically Thomas v. 28).
  • Meditation: 1 Corinthians 15:1-58
