Day 21 - The Truth will set you Free: Slavery to sin; freedom through Jesus

Jesus continues a discourse from yesterday and carries it into a conversation - more like an argument. The Jews and Jesus go back and forth with questions and answers. Jesus keeps presenting His case with arguments of the Truth, but the Jews continue to question and reject what He is saying. The text points to two things at the end of this chapter: 1. The Jews' question and 2. Jesus' answer.  The argument comes to a climax for the Jews when they FINALLY ask, "Who do you make yourself out to be? (53)" and Jesus' resounding answer in verse 58, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." There is no doubt Who Jesus was claiming to be - He had come from the Father and was part of the Trinity.

We again trace words like belief, truth, and lies. The concept of being a slave to sin is introduced today. This is a subject we hear much about from the Apostle Paul. If you have some resources like The Ology, today would be a great day to pull those out and talk to even your youngest children about sin and our slavery to it. BUT Jesus has come to rescue us and free us from sin! Make sure you sing the songs with them today!

  • Reading: John 8:31-59
  • Memory passage: John 1:1-14
  • Memory passage: Matthew 28:1-10 - I am going to begin reviewing the Resurrection passage with my children. We learned the story from Matthew, but you could also work any of the other Gospels.
  • Songs: Amazing Grace or And Can it Be
  • Activity: Review the story of the Israelites being slaves in Egypt and how God raised up Moses to free and deliver His people. Also a good thing to talk about would again be how every word of God is true, in contrast to the deception and lies of Satan.
  • Meditation: Romans 6:1-23
