Singing through the Hymnal: week 17

Verse: Matthew 7:24-25
Hymn: How Firm a Foundation

Each week, it seems that we are singing another one of my favorite hymns. How Firm a Foundation is also one of my children's favorites at the moment. We were reading about Job last week and how God sustained him through all those difficulties. Job trusted God, because God is trustworthy. God is our rock. He is our sure foundation. He will never change. We can trust in Him! Another good one to sing this week would be On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand

Fun Facts

Text: Anonymous
  • We aren't sure who wrote this text, but it was first put into a hymnal by John Rippon, entitled: A Selection of Hymns from the Best Authors, Intended to Be an Appendix to Dr. Watts' Psalms and Hymns (1787).
  • This has been a favorite hymn over the centuries and was sung at the funerals of General Robert E. Lee, President Theodore Roosevelt, and President Woodrow Wilson.

Tune: Traditional American melody FOUNDATION

  • originally, this was sung to an English melody
  • traditional means that it has been passed down verbally from generation to generation
  • the tune is pentatonic ( a common 5-note scale )
  • It can be sung as a canon

Remember to order you copy of the hymnal we are singing through if you still need a hymnal!

    Things to think about ...
    • Just like our houses need a good foundation, how much more do our lives need a good foundation? We need Jesus and His Word as our foundation
    • Stanza 1 - God's Word is completely sufficient and we need hear NOTHING else than what He has said in the Bible.
    • Stanzas 2-4 God speaks directly to us in the first person (Isaiah 41:10; 43:2; Zechariah 13:9)
    • Stanza 5 is the Christian's declaration (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:38-39; Hebrews 13:5-6)
