Singing through the Hymnal: week 5

Verse:  Revelation 19:16

This week, we continue to sing specifically that God is our King. What a wonderful truth to teach to our children. In the uncertainty of life each day, we can be confident that God is our everlasting King and is Lord over all.

Fun Facts

Text: Edward Perronet (1726-1792); John Rippon (stanza 5)

  • Edward was drawn to the revivals of Whitfield and the Wesleys and endured opposition because of it. He could truly rest in the truth that God was King over all.
Tune: CORONATION Oliver Holden (1765-1844)

  • Oliver did many things - He was a carpenter, pastor, musician who lived in Massachusetts. He was known for writing the music for a visit to honor George Washington's visit to Boston.

Remember to order you copy of the hymnal we are singing through if you still need a hymnal!

    Things to think about ...
    •      It is such a beautiful thing to think about how old the tune and text is for this hymn. What a wonderful encouragement to sing truths that saints from the past have written down for us!
    • Explain what a coronation is to your children. Maybe google and watch one with them.
    • Read a scene from the throne room of Heaven to them - ask your family to identify all the different people and characters who are there. Ask them - will you be there? Use this as a spring board to the Gospel!
    • There are many words you can define for your children as you sing. Maybe pick a word or concept each day as you sing.
