Day 18 - Tension and Division

Rivers of living water to the nations
Today is simply finishing the discourse from yesterday (in case you didn't read the entire chapter). I broke it up, simply because of length for my children. Remember that the chapter comes to a climax in vv. 37-38. Below again is the structure of the chapter so you can review yesterday and add on to today.

(1-9) Jesus initially declines the journey to Jerusalem
(10-13) Jesus does go to Jerusalem
(14-36) Jesus teaches and enters into debate and controversy in the temple area
(37-39) Jesus' self-declaration as the One who gives eternal life (drink to those who are thirsty)
(40-44) contrary and divisive opinions of the above claim
(45-52) religious leaders attempt to arrest Jesus

In verse 31, we again see many believing in Jesus. There is also so much tension and division here. It is sad to read of those who openly reject Jesus. Something interesting to take note of is that we read of Nicodemus again in the end of this chapter which was one of our first encounters with Jesus from chapter 3.

  • Activity: Add a few more faces to those who believe and also add a few faces to those who do not believe
  • Meditation: 1 John 5:20
